Formerly known as Reunification Therapy, Resist/Refuse Counseling is a therapeutic process aimed at rebuilding or re-establishing relationships between parents and children after a period of estrangement or separation. This type of counseling is commonly used in cases of high-conflict divorces, situations involving parental alienation, or where a parent and child have been separated due to various circumstances, such as legal disputes or mental health issues. Resist/Refuse Counseling is a delicate and complex process that requires a skilled mental health professional with experience and training in family dynamics, child psychology, and conflict resolution.
The primary goal is to repair and restore the parent-child relationship in a way that is healthy and safe for the child. This might involve addressing underlying issues like communication problems, trust issues, or misconceptions that may have developed during the period of estrangement. Parents may receive education and support on effective parenting skills, and ways to create a supportive and nurturing environment for the child.
Reunification therapy is often court-ordered, particularly in cases where a parent has been accused of alienation or where there are concerns about the child’s well-being. At the start of the process, your therapist will assess family dynamics to understand the reasons for estrangement, evaluating the psychological well-being of both the child and the parent.
Sessions are usually structured and may involve individual therapy for the parent, child, joint sessions and sometimes family therapy. The therapist facilitates communication, helps the child express their feelings, and guides the parent in responding in a supportive way.
Depending on the level of estrangement, the process may involve a gradual reintroduction of the parent into the child’s life. This could start with supervised visits or communication exercises, progressing to more unsupervised and regular interactions. The therapist works on resolving any underlying conflicts that may have contributed to the estrangement, such as miscommunications, misunderstandings, or external influences that may have caused the rift.
The child’s emotional and psychological well-being is the priority. We ensure that the child feels safe and supported and that the pace of reunification is appropriate for their comfort level.
