Psychosexual evaluations are specialized assessments that go beyond traditional psychological evaluations to focus on aspects of sexuality. Such evaluations are typically requested by defense attorneys and occasionally by the courts. Goals of the psychosexual evaluation include clarifying diagnostic impressions, offering treatment recommendations, rendering suggestions regarding community supervision, contact with minors, or use of the Internet, estimating threat to the community, and determining risk of sexual recidivism. A typical psychosexual evaluation may require two to three hours of face-to-face forensic interviews with the client. Approximately six hours of psychological testing is often needed. Therefore, several office visits are generally required. If necessary the client may be evaluated while incarcerated. State-of-the-art testing is available to give objective measures of sexual interests, using the Abel Assessment for Sexual Interest- Second Edition (AASI-2) (abelscreening.com). Psychosexual evaluations also may use actuarial rating scales that are based on long-term follow-up studies of thousands of released sex offenders. By comparing demographic and other characteristics of the client and his charges with those of sex offenders who later committed new sexual offenses (sexual recidivism), a realistic estimate of the likelihood that the client would sexually re-offend is obtained.
